In a major step toward sustainable innovation, John Deere has revealed plans to invest \$69.6 million in building a new battery and charger production plant in Kernersville, North Carolina. This advanced 115,000-square-foot facility will serve as the main North American base for John Deere Electric Powertrain and will be developed alongside Austrian battery tech firm Kreisel Electric GMBH.
Why Kernersville?
Kernersville was selected for its advantageous location in the Piedmont Triad region, which provides a skilled labor pool and convenient access to transportation routes. The plant will feature eco-friendly infrastructure, including modern HVAC systems, energy-efficient lighting, and smart irrigation, reflecting John Deere’s push for greener operations.
Boost to the Local Economy
The new facility is expected to generate about 50 full-time jobs, ranging from assembly line workers and packagers to quality assurance staff. These positions are anticipated to contribute more than \$3 million annually to the regional economy. To support the initiative, the state has granted \$100,000 through the One North Carolina Fund, contingent upon meeting job creation and investment goals.
Driving John Deere’s Electrification Plans
This investment is part of John Deere’s broader electrification strategy, aimed at expanding low- and zero-emission power solutions for its customers. The Kernersville site will manufacture Kreisel’s advanced battery packs and CHIMERO charging systems, supporting the growing demand for electric and hybrid off-highway equipment across North America. By 2026, John Deere intends to offer a wider range of electric-powered construction machines.

The project has received widespread support from state and regional officials. Governor Roy Cooper noted North Carolina’s growing reputation as a clean energy and manufacturing hub. Meanwhile, Mark Owens, CEO of Greater Winston-Salem, Inc., praised the development as a key step in cementing Forsyth County’s leadership in advanced manufacturing throughout the Southeast.
